Sumant in Continental Asian Junior Boys and Girls Chess Championships 2009, Sri Lanka

Padmini Rout and Ashwin Jayaram Win Gold in Continental Asian Junior Boys and Girls Chess Championships 2009 - Colombo, Sri Lanka. SUMANT SCORES 5 POINTS & 16th PLACING IN CONTINENTAL ASIAN JUNIOR BOYS CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2009, SRI LANKA.

Asian Junior Chess Tournament started from 1st July to 7th July was held at the Ceylon Continental Hotel in Colombo.

The tournament which is organized by the Sri Lanka Chess Federation on behalf of FIDE and the Asian Chess Federation.

Chess players representing India, Pakistan, Iran, Kirgizstan, Kazakhstan, Chinese-Taipei, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Bangladesh and Nepal took part in the tournament. 30 players represented Sri Lanka in the tournament.

This is the 33rd Asian Junior Chess Tournament held and Sri Lanka hosted the tournament twice in 2000 and 2001.

The Indian Players International Master Ashwin Jayaram and Women International Master Padmini Rute managed to clinch the Continental Asian Junior Boys and Girls titles respectively at these prestigious Chess Championships. Ashwin scored a total of 8 points and Padmini 8.5 points out of the possible 9 games. In the final round Ashwin drew with another IM from India, Shyam Sundar, while Padimini outplayed young Navindi Abeywardena of Sri Lanka.

Organized by the Kuala Lumpur Chess Association (KLCA) and played according to the FIDE Laws of Chess from 25-26 July 2009 at the 2nd Floor, Pearl Point Shopping Mall, Kuala Lumpur.

1) Format of Play & Time Control: There will be 3 categories, U13, U-11, and U-9, each over 7 Rounds using the Swiss System and paired with the Swiss Manager program. Each player will be given 45 minutes per round to complete their games.

2) The Schedule of Play is as follows:

KL Young Talent Development Program

· The first 3 winners together with the top 3 girls in each category will be invited to join the KL Young Talent Development Program 2009/10. Other participants many also apply to be members and this will be decided by the KLCA Council.

· The KL Young Talent Development Program will run from August 2009 till July 2010 as follows:

a) 12 weekend training sessions throughout the year.

b) Free entry to KL Open and representation of KLCA in team competitions where possible.

c) Special 4 day boot camp during long school terms break.

d) Financial support in consultation with MCF if selected to represent Malaysia in designated ASEAN/Asian/World Youth competitions.

Chess in Asean Para Games 2009

MALAYSIA will be represented by a contingent of 350 (259 athletes and 91 officials) in the fifth edition of the Asean Para Games in Kuala Lumpur from Aug 15 to 19.

The Malaysian contingent co-ordinator P. Mohan said the athletes were selected after a series of selection process.

“We have 195 men and 64 women athletes in the contingent. Most of them are training at the National Sports Council (NSC) training centre in Bukit Jalil.

“Those unable to attend the training programme have been granted permission to train at their respective centre of excellence,’’ said Mohan.

Malaysia will be taking part in all 11 sports — athletics, swimming, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, table tennis, sailing, sitting volleyball, bowling, badminton, chess and powerlifting.

At the last Asean Para Games in Korat, Thailand, 14 sports were contested. Malaysia, represented by 191 athletes (145 men and 46 women), won 82 gold, 74 silver and 46 bronze medals.

However, Mohan said they were not prepared to make any forecast yet.

“The coaches and athletes are involved in an intensive training programme.

Full support: Former Prime Minister’s wife Tun Jeanne Abdullah who is also the patron of Malaysian Paralympic Council having a light moment with an athlete for the Asean Para Games, Law King Kiew, 48, after launching the Proud Support Programme, in conjuntion with the upcoming 5th Asean Para Games.

“They are committed towards giving a good account in the Asean Para Games.

“We will also be pleased if the the public come in full force to cheer the Malaysian athletes,’’ said Mohan.

Besides Malaysia, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Laos, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Timor Leste have confirmed their participation in the Asean Para Games.
