The European Club Cup 2008 will begin at Kallithea, Halkidiki, Greece on the 16 - 24 October 2008 which see 63 teams competing in the Mens section while 19 teams competing in the Womens section which bring a total of 82 teams altogether.

Mens Section
In the mens section we will see 147 GMs, 89 IMs, 1 WGM, 2 WFM & hundreds of FMs taking part in this event. Besides that we will also see 4 GMs that played in the recently concluded Bilbao Masters. The 4 of them were GM Levon Aronian (Arm) & GM Magnus Carlsen (Nor) will be playing for MIKA Chess Club 1st board & 2nd board respectively & they will be joined by GM Boris Gelfand (3rd Isr), GM Gabriel Sargissian (4th Arm), GM Baadur Jobava (5th Arm), GM Tigran L Petrosian (6th Arm) & GM Arman Pashikian (7th Arm). GM Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukr)for TPS Saransk 1st board while his teammates are GM Sergey Volkov, GM Evgeniy Najer, GM Valerij Popov, GM Mikhail Kobalia, GM Sergey Ivanov, GM Konstantin Sakaev (all from Russia) & GM Andrei Volokitin (Ukr). GM Teimour Radjabov (Aze) for URAL Sverdlovskaya 1st board and his team members are GM Alexei Shirov (Esp), GM Gata Kamsky (US), GM Alexander Grischuk, GM Vladimir Malakhov, GM Alexey Dreev, GM Alexander Motylev & GM Nukhim N Rashkovsky (all from Russia). They are the top seed for this event. Bilbao Champion GM Veselin Topalov will give this tournament a skip while World No 1 Visvanathan Anand will prepare for the World Chess Championship title against GM Vladimir Kramnik.
FIDE Grand Prix current leader GM Wang Yue (Chn) will play in 4th board for Economist SGSEU-1 Saratov together with his compatriot countrymen GM Ni Hua on the 3rd board. Here are other team members for Economist SGSEU- 1 Saratov:- GM Evgeny Alekseev, GM Evgeny Tomashevsky, GM Michael Roiz (Isr), GM Alexander Galkin, GM Dmitry Andreikin & GM Ildar Khairullin (Russia unless stated). It seems this team is strong by putting these 2 Chinese GMs Wang Yue & Ni Hua on 4th & 3rd board in terms of tactical win.
We also have World No. 2 GM Alexander Morozevich (Rus) for team CC "Bosna" Sarajevo. His teammates are GM Sergei Movsesian (Svk), GM Viktor Bologan (Mda), GM Ivan Ivanisevic (Srb), GM Artyom Timofeev (Rus), GM Borki Predojevic (Bih) & IM Dalibor Stojanovic (Bih).

In this section, we will have 7 GMs, 16 WGMs, 27 IMs, 8 WIMs & severals FMs & WFMs playing. Recent Women World Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk won't be taking part but however we will see current Women World Runner-up China teenage sensation girl WGM Hou Yifan playing for Spartak Vidnoe in 6th board. Before this tournament she will take at the 1st World Mind Sports Games in Beijing on 3-8 October. Her team members are IM Kosintseva Nadezhda, IM Kosintseva Tatiana (All Russia), GM Tairova Elena (Bul), IM Stefanova Antoaneta & IM Zhao Xue (Chn). However they have to be wary of the 1st seed Cercle d'Echecs Monte Carlo which consists of GM Koneru Humpy (Ind),GM Xie Jun (Chn), GM Pia Cramling (Swe), IM Socko Monika (Pol), IM Dzagnidze Nana(Geo) & IM Skripchenko Almira(Fra).
