GM Gata Kamsky(US) GM Veselin Topalov(Bulgaria)
World Chess Challenge will see two famous grandmasters competing each other in the 8 rounds whom are GM Gata Kamsky from USA and native Bulgarian GM Veselin Topalov (currently residing in Spain). In November-December 2007, Kamsky won the Chess World Cup 2007. In the final he defeated Alexei Shirov (+1-0=3). This earned him a match against Veselin Topalov in 2009, for the right to challenge for the World Chess Championship 2009 which the prize fund is US $250,000, and winner is scheduled to challenge World Champion Viswanathan Anand later this year. The Topalov team consists of his compatriot Ivan Cheparinov, the Spanish player Franzisco Vallejo and the Dutch GM Erwin L’Ami had been in Sofia for a week now, while Gata Kamsky and his team still hidden and will arrive in the Bulgarian capital (Thursday, February 12th). The former have taken residence in the five star Kempinski Zografski hotel, while the Kamsky team will be in the five start Hilton just across the street from the venue, the 6th Hall of the National Palace of Culture (Pic). It seems GM Veselin Topalov hold the advantage over Gata Kamsky with 6-2. However Gata Kamsky can become the dark horse and had taken part in the GM Corus A 2009 in the 7th placing scoring 6.5/13 as his last part of his preparation against Topalov.
