A total of 141 players from around the world will take part in the Thailand Open Chess Championship 2009 which going to be held at the beautiful Aisawan Resort & Spa in the quiet Wongamart Beach, only 2km from the famous Pattaya Beach, 1-6 April 2009. Thailand Open will start exactly 1 week from now. GM Nigel Short will start as the favorite to win the event however he will face stiff challenge from Mihkeil Mchedlishvili (Georgia), Li Shilong(China), Mark Paragua(Philippines), Georgy Timonshenko(Ukraine), & Abhijit Kunte(India). However Malaysia will be represented by IM Mas Hafizulhelmi, FM Mok Tze Meng, FM Peter Long, former police world champion Ismail Ahmad, NM Kamal Abdullah, former national junior player Gerald Soh, Sarawakian Abang Draup Zamhari & Hj, Abang Azman Draup & Khairul Nazmi. Besides that Pinoy Ian Udani who often win local chess competition will also take part in the Thailand Open. It would be interesting to watch the games as Hairul Hamid will follow the Malaysian team to do live reporting. Kudos to Hairul after Gilachess feat to Vietnam & Philippine last year.
